Chase & Chloe.jpgChloe’s life has never been the easiest ride, and now she finds herself in chaos and running away from home in her abusive stepfather’s stolen car. When she breaks down in the middle of nowhere, she doesn’t expect to come face to face with Chase; eldest son to the leader of the notoriously feared Horsemen Motorcycle Club.

With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, Chloe reluctantly accepts Chase’s offer of a place to stay, despite her knowing that he can’t be trusted. This big, bad, biker can’t mean any good, can he?

review

Once again, I find myself in the position of being somewhat torn in my opinion of a book.

On the one hand, there were elements of the relationship between these two characters that I really enjoyed – they had real chemistry and the interaction with the respective families added an extra layer to the story.

On the other hand, this was one of those stories, where you really, really just wanted the main characters to have a conversation to resolve their issues rather than (in Chloe’s case) running away.  Every. Single.  Time.  I confess, that became beyond frustrating, though it did underscore her young age.

Ultimately, I would class this as a book that missed the mark a little, but was nevertheless an entertaining diversion.

About the author

My name is Simone, most know me as Explode. My passions are writing, tattoos and my family.

Writing to me, is an outlet. I write every day, regardless of my mood or commitments. I can’t say I get inspiration for my books. They come to me out of nowhere and then I plot it out and before I know it I’m ten chapters deep. Writing is an art and I think everyone has a story in them but only certain people are able to tell them.

Death & Beauty.jpgBaldr the Beautiful is dead.

Desperate to get back to his privileged role as Óðinn’s favorite son, Baldr strikes a bargain with Hel, the terrifying half living and half skeletal queen of the realm of the dead. He offers her the only thing he’s got: knowledge from the living world. Hel gives him three days. If he can teach her something new, she will return him to the realms of the living.

But the icy Hel seems completely impervious to Baldr’s charms. What’s worse, she already knows everything. By the end of the third day, Baldr realizes he’s only got one chance left to impress her.

Returning to his former life looks like it’s going to depend on Baldr the Beautiful seducing the most formidable woman in the Nine Realms.

I don’t know whether, at 150 pages, this still classes as a novella.  However, clearly, it is truncated in length, yet once again, the author is able to produce a wonderful mythological romp.

I don’t know whether this is a retelling of an original myth and, frankly, I don’t much care. For me, the author has once again produced colourful characters who, although the stuff of legends, are nevertheless beset with human flaws and insecurities.  I think that’s what makes this book – the characters are accessible.

Another worthy addition to my kindle from this author.

Review – Persephone Remembers the Pomegranates by Samantha MacLeod @writersammac

persephone.jpgYou’ve heard it was the pomegranate.

Those six juicy, ruby seeds, staining my lips and fingers. Sealing my fate. Damning me.

Well, maybe so.

But that’s not entirely the truth.

review

It’s surprising to me how it is possible to tell a story within just 20 pages.  This is a snapshot into the Persephone myth; an intriguing retelling of the story of the pomegranate seeds.  You may know it, or you may not – it makes no difference to the enjoyment of the story, in my opinion.

Within these scant pages, the author has imbued personality and naivete into the character of Persephone, and has, at the same time, done a decent job of describing the depth of relationship between her and Hades.

Well worth a peek.
