Dana McIntyre has been bitten by a master vampire. She’s infected with the venom. And after killing hundreds of vampires to keep Las Vegas safe, she’d rather die than turn.

There might be a cure. But the only way to get it is through Nissa Royal, a vampire with close ties to the masters of Las Vegas. Nissa is dangerous — too dangerous to be allowed to live, much less work alongside.

But if Dana dies, vampires win Vegas. If she doesn’t die, she becomes one of the bloodless. The cure’s her only chance. In this deadly game of hold ’em, Dana’s drawing dead, and whatever happens next, there’s no changing her losing hand. Dana only knows one thing: If she’s going down, she’s taking as many vampires as possible on her way out…

review

What’s that?  Sara Reine has a new series out and would I like to read it??? There is really only one answer to that – a resounding YES!!!

Relatively short, at 230 paperback pages, this book, whilst set in the richly detailed Descentverse, has, to my mind, a very different feel to it.  The other books are all about finesse, magic, politics and intrigue, much like the lead characters.  They have a giddying level of plot complexities that I just sometimes can’t keep up with.  Not so with this one.  Much like Dana herself, this book is much more straightforward, more blunt and to the point.

Now, don’t get me wrong – this is absolutely not a criticism.  Far from it.  The different narrative voice works very well for this particular story line.  Dana, whilst on the surface one of the more crude characters that the author has gifted us, is nevertheless every bit as complex as one might expect from Ms Reine’s characters – she’s just got different wrapping.

Ms Reine continues to produce fresh, entertaining stories.  Long may that trend continue.

excerpt

There was just something about him that makes my insides flip around. He makes me smile finally. I haven’t smiled in a very long time. And he makes me feel safe when I am with him. He makes me feel things I have never felt before.

I could lose myself in his eyes and not even realize the time lost. They were so big and beautiful. The glowing bright green color was magical, mythical even. The slightest touch of his hand sent the most powerful surge of electricity through my body. He made me want him in ways I have never wanted anyone before. He makes my breath catch and causes my knees to go weak with just a look or a simple touch.

I laid there thinking of the things I wanted to do to him until he was standing in front of me. Odin walked over to the bed and pulled me up to stand in front of him. He aggressively pulled my shirt off revealing my black and red lace bra once more. He unbuttoned my pants letting them fall to my feet. He pulled his shirt off letting me gaze at his ripped chest and a gasp of excitement slipped from me when my eyes landed on the particular spot where those v things were.

Stepping out of my jeans I ran my fingers across his chest feeling his toned muscles until I reached his back. I couldn’t help myself and dug my nails into the flesh of his back just enough to show him the hunger I had for him. His breath quickened and he threw me back onto the bed. I opened my legs up to him as he climbed on top of me. I invited him to get closer to me than anyone else ever has. Heat radiated from the both of us and traces of tingles lingered in the places on my body that he touched.

His chest was firm and smooth and ripped in all the right places. I traced my fingers down each one of his abs until the landed on the rim of his jeans. I grabbed them and pulled on them bringing him closer to me. I wanted him. I needed him. My hunger only grew until I just about couldn’t stand it anymore.

He ran his fingers across the bottom of my stomach causing a small tickle and a giggle left my throat. He pulled away and stared at me for a moment before saying, “You are more beautiful than I could have ever imagined, lamia mea.”

Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Adult

Shadow.jpgFrom USA TODAY bestselling author, a psychic warfare alternative history set in a gritty version of Earth. Contains strong romantic elements – a book in the Bridge & Sword World. Apocalyptic. Psychic Romance.

“All what he has done, he has done for the greater good…”

Following the disappearance of the infamous “Sword” and leader of the anti-human rebellion, Allie finds herself despised by every free seer in the western world, and most in the East. Hiding in an underground cell to stay alive, she struggles with yet another visage of Revik, who turns into a feral animal once free of his dark masters.

She only has one shot at saving him, and it means learning more about his past than she ever wanted to know. It also means re-earning his trust, a near-impossible task given what she had to do to get him free.

Meanwhile, a mysterious force rises, known only as “Shadow,” boasting an army of powerful and ancient seers–seers with a darker agenda than even the Rooks.

NOTE: An alternate version of this book was previously published as part of the “ALLIE’S WAR” series (this version has been revised/edited prior to re-release).

Standalone novel. No cliffhanger.

*Warning: this book contains graphic language, sex, and violence. Mature readers only. Not intended for young readers.*

SHADOW is book 4 in the Bridge & Sword: Awakenings series – a series set in the Bridge & Sword World. It is also related to the Quentin Black World, and takes place in the wider history/world of the seers.

Next in the Bridge & Sword world: KNIGHT (Bridge & Sword: Apocalypse #1) – coming soon! Or if you’d like to read more about seers, check out BLACK IN WHITE (Quentin Black Mystery #1), which occurs in a version of Earth much closer to our own.

THE BRIDGE & SWORD WORLD encompasses a number of dark, gritty science fiction and apocalyptic story arcs with romantic (and sexy) elements, starring Alyson Taylor and her partner, dark and dangerous infiltrator, Dehgoies Revik. For fans of gritty, character-driven science fiction and fantasy worlds, filled with twists and turns and backstabbing betrayals, with heroes and villains who can be equally relatable (and sometimes the same people). The Bridge & Sword books span continents and historical periods as Allie and Revik try to save the human and seer races from destroying one another, and keep their friends and loved ones alive in the process.

BRIDGE & SWORD WORLD Reading Order:

review

What can I say about this series that I haven’t said already?

I know I have mentioned in previous reviews that reading Allie and Revik’s story is exquisite torture.  And that remains my view.  With this addition to the series however, that is really ratcheted up.

My emotional connection with these characters was put to the test.  With each revelation, each disclosure my heart broke for them just a little more.  But Allie’s response really resonated.

This is not an easy read.  Don’t expect hearts and flowers.  You just won’t get them.  What you will get is a tumultuous and emotional read.  With just a touch of hope.

About the author

I’m a USA Today bestselling author of sexy, apocalyptic and cyberpunk-y paranormal mystery, alternate history, urban fantasy & supernatural suspense, often with a metaphysical bent.

While it might seem like I have a (perhaps overly?) friendly relationship with my dark side, if you read my stuff, you’ll discover pretty quick that, at base and in my heart, I’m a big, sappy, pie in the sky idealist, and that I always want the light to win, love to win, the good guys to win, compassion to win, the bad guys to be redeemed or at least to find love…even if they have to crawl through mud and blood and crazy sex and betrayal and broken fingernails to get there.

Of course, not all of them make it…but I always hope that they will.

Other stuff: I have a background in journalism and political history, and a Master’s degree in the latter. I love to travel and to interact with different cultures and histories and I’ve traveled a fair bit (although never enough – there are always new places to see!).  I’ve also lived a lot of different places, including all over the United States where I was born, as well as stints in Europe, Australia and now Asia, including a few years in India and now a few in Thailand.

Currently, I live and work full-time as a writer in Bangkok, Thailand, where I have a beautiful view of a Buddhist wat right out the window while I write.
