Book & Author Details:

Rook (Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #1) by J C Andrijeski
Publication date: 22nd April 2017
Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Adult

RookFrom USA TODAY bestselling author, a psychic warfare alternative history set in a gritty version of Earth. Contains strong romantic elements – a book in the Bridge & Sword World. Apocalyptic. Psychic Romance.

“You are the Bridge…”

Allie Taylor lives in a world populated by seers, a second race discovered on Earth at the beginning of the 20th Century. Psychic, hyper-sexual and enslaved by governments, corporations and wealthy humans, seers are an exotic fascination to Allie, but one she knows she’ll likely never encounter, given how rich you have to be to get near one.

Then a strange man shows up at her work –– then another –– and pretty soon Allie finds herself on the run from the law, labeled a terrorist and in the middle of a race war she didn’t even know existed. Yanked out of her life by the mysterious and uncommunicative Revik, Allie discovers her blood may not be as “human” as she always thought, and the world of seers might not be quite as distant as she always imagined.

When Revik tells her she’s the Bridge, a mystical being meant to usher in the evolution of humanity––or possibly its extinction––Allie must choose between the race that raised her and the one where she might truly belong.

A psychic end of the world story with romance, a cyberpunk flair and apocalyptic, metaphysical leanings akin to the Matrix.

NOTE: An alternate version of this book was previously published as book 1 in the “ALLIE’S WAR” series (this version has been heavily revised/edited prior to re-release).

Standalone novel. No cliffhanger.

*Warning: this book contains graphic language, sex, and violence. Mature readers only. Not intended for young readers.*

ROOK is book 1 in the Bridge & Sword: Awakenings series – a series set in the Bridge & Sword World. It is also related to the Quentin Black World, and takes place in the wider history/world of the seers.

Next in the Bridge & Sword world: SHIELD (Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #2) – coming soon! Or if you’d like to read more about seers, check out BLACK IN WHITE (Quentin Black Mystery #1), which occurs in a version of Earth much closer to our own.

THE BRIDGE & SWORD WORLD encompasses a number of dark, gritty science fiction and apocalyptic story arcs with romantic (and sexy) elements, starring Alyson Taylor and her partner, dark and dangerous infiltrator, Dehgoies Revik. For fans of gritty, character-driven science fiction and fantasy worlds, filled with twists and turns and backstabbing betrayals, with heroes and villains who can be equally relatable (and sometimes the same people). The Bridge & Sword books span continents and historical periods as Allie and Revik try to save the human and seer races from destroying one another, and keep their friends and loved ones alive in the process.

review

If you like your books with complex world building, and detailed, intricate mythology and history, with wonderfully deep character development then this book might just be for you!

Now obviously, I don’t want to give anything away, but parts of the relationship story between Allie and Revik hurt my heart.  The author seems to do that to me with regularity, which is a testament to the strength of her writing.  But don’t get misunderstand, the relationship within these pages has a very different feel to the Quentin Black stories.  There is a sense of yearning which just drew me in.

This is not a book which is a superficial read.  This is the kind of book that you have to focus on – that’s really not a chore though when the writing and the pacing is as good as this.  The way the web weaves together is really very clever.

I look forward to reading more in the series.

About the author

I’m a USA Today bestselling author of sexy, apocalyptic and cyberpunk-y paranormal mystery, alternate history, urban fantasy & supernatural suspense, often with a metaphysical bent.

While it might seem like I have a (perhaps overly?) friendly relationship with my dark side, if you read my stuff, you’ll discover pretty quick that, at base and in my heart, I’m a big, sappy, pie in the sky idealist, and that I always want the light to win, love to win, the good guys to win, compassion to win, the bad guys to be redeemed or at least to find love…even if they have to crawl through mud and blood and crazy sex and betrayal and broken fingernails to get there.

Of course, not all of them make it…but I always hope that they will.

Other stuff: I have a background in journalism and political history, and a Master’s degree in the latter. I love to travel and to interact with different cultures and histories and I’ve traveled a fair bit (although never enough – there are always new places to see!).  I’ve also lived a lot of different places, including all over the United States where I was born, as well as stints in Europe, Australia and now Asia, including a few years in India and now a few in Thailand.

Currently, I live and work full-time as a writer in Bangkok, Thailand, where I have a beautiful view of a Buddhist wat right out the window while I write.

Review – Third & Long by Kata Cuic @authorkatacuic

Book & Author Details:

Third & Long by Kata Cuic
Publication date: April 9th 2017
Genres: Sports, Contemporary, Romance

Third and long.jpgNot everyone plays by the rules.

Eva Papageorgiou has it all: the popularity that always felt so elusive in high school, looks that men can’t ignore, and a boyfriend that other women covet. She’s gorgeous, powerful; she has the world at her fingertips.

And it’s all a lie.

The problem with living a lie is how easy it is to forget who you’re lying to. Eva’s time to withdraw into the shadows has expired, courtesy of Rob’s rising fame. Her only option is to hide in plain sight.
Amid all the chaos, Rob is her safe escape from it all. They continue to be stronger together than they ever could be on their own.
Until being together is what tears them apart.

Rob Falls has everything he’s ever wanted: his dream girl, a winning team, respect from everyone. He’s at the top of his game, with a Heisman nod on the horizon, and the potential to be a first-round draft pick.

And it’s all crumbling before his eyes.

The mounting pressure of being an athlete at the next level while doing all he can to protect Eva takes its toll. He doesn’t sleep enough, he worries constantly, and he’s torn wanting to be in two places at once.

Rob never imagined the day he’d have to choose between fame and love.

Sometimes life makes choices for us.

With the game and their hearts on the line, will Rob and Eva keep their secrets hidden? Or will they reveal everything to each other, to themselves, to the world…only to lose it all?

review

This is one of those stories where I am genuinely torn about this review.

On the one hand, I have grown to love these characters over the course of the previous two books.  I really felt like this volume would be a stepping stone to the happy every after that I want for the pair.

On the other hand however, there were elements of this book that I really, really struggled with.  The sorority house in particular.  I have been so invested in this pair’s story, that I felt the perceived betrayal at a personal level.

But the heart wrenching part of this was watching them fall apart on so many levels.  It was almost too much.

And if I’m completely honest, this one felt over long; a little as though we were being dragged over the coals in an unnecessarily extended manner.

That said, I need the concluding volume.  I need to see what happens.  And if they don’t get the HEA I hope for?  Let’s just say I hope it doesn’t come to that.

About the author

Kata lives in the greater Pittsburgh, PA region with her husband and three children. When she isn’t writing or rewriting or editing or staring at the infuriating blinking cursor on her screen, she’s reading. This tends to be a point of contention with the aforementioned family since Kata can’t put a book down once she reads the first line. It’s all or nothing in a matter of hours. Binge reading tends to be detrimental to domestic goddess/supermom duties. Caffeine, wine, and natural insomnia are constant bolsters in the pursuit of getting everything done.

She has a degree in Linguistics and is, in fact, fluent in several American English dialects including Pittsburghese and sarcasm. She’s eternally grateful to be a part of the last generation to go through college without social media documenting the entire ordeal.

All she wanted was to write a story she couldn’t get out of her head. Unfortunately, things in life tend to snowball faster than her husband on the mountain at a ski resort. After penning her first book which turned into three separate manuscripts in a series, she realized she might have a problem. Life hasn’t been the same since.

She loves long walks on the beach, romantic candlelight dinners, and holding hands. Just kidding. Her true loves are football, steak and Buffalo wings, the occasional blizzard, bonfires with friends and family, and learning new things.

Review – Beastly Lights by Theresa Jane @authortheresaj @inkitt

Book & Author Details:

Beastly Lights by Theresa Jane
Publication date: April 2nd 2017
Genres: Romance, Contemporary

beastly lights.jpgGambled away by her brother, Freya is now bound to the music world’s resident bad boy Liam Henderson as his live-in maid.

Freya Coleman is a struggling artist who can hardly get by. With a past she would rather not revisit and a future that didn’t extend past her next cup of coffee, something had to change. Freya just didn’t know how much.

Liam Henderson lives in the spotlight. His wild nights and latest conquests make every woman want him, and every man want to be him. The rockstar has a carefully constructed persona to keep everyone out. That is, until a drunken night gets out of hand and he finds himself with the winning hand in a poker game, and the prize is a feisty redhead. A prize who just might break down the walls he has been so desperately hiding behind.

Thrown together, these two are a disaster waiting to happen. A disaster the world is eager to watch and comment on until their fingers drop off. What starts off as a fake relationship to improve Liam’s image, blossoms into so much more, and Freya is swept up into the world of bright lights and illusions. Everyone has an opinion when the lights are shining on their beloved rock god Liam Henderson, and they are eagerly waiting to tear down anyone who is bathed in the famous glow.

Can happily ever after exist when the whole world is watching?

review

This felt a bit like a book of two halves.  The first half of the book had characters that I wasn’t particularly enamoured with, and a somewhat up and down plot line.  Thereafter, it seems that the author hit her narrative style.  And, whilst Freya was still annoying, and Liam was still a self indulgent idiot, it was less of an issue, and fed more into the plot arc.

Ultimately however, this was an enjoyable story.  The author has managed to create characters who, despite their flaws, felt raw and genuine.  A promising debut.

About the author

I have spent most of my life immersed in literary wonderlands, often forgetting to come up for a breath of reality. Most of my schooling was spent hiding my latest book beneath the table and jotting down notes in the margins to tell all of my friends later. Writing has always been my second love, and my imagination has been dominated by fairytales, daring knights and happily ever afters. There was no choice but to put pen to paper if only to retain some semblance of sanity.

I live in the greatest city in the world; Melbourne, Australia (and will not let anyone tell me otherwise) and when I’m not writing, I’m off trying to find the best places for tea and scones.
