BID Arthur Test 9Synopsis:

Genevieve is a lawyer, not a babysitter, and certainly not a dog trainer. She is just about to become a full barrister, a British litigating attorney, when her law mentor dies unexpectedly. She is shuffled off to another barrister, one who’s nothing at all like her kind and decent former mentor, and then she is assigned the office’s worst case: Arthur Finch-Hatten, six-feet and four-inches of ripped, loaded, hot English nobleman who is wasting his life and his inherited estate so audaciously that his younger brother is suing him for control of their family’s earldom. There is a darn good chance that Arthur will lose everything, even his crazed, badly behaved puppy.

Unless he shapes up.

Her new boss hasn’t been able to convince Arthur to mend his ways. His uncle’s lectures haven’t had any effect on his depraved debauchery and lavish lifestyle.

The only way for Genevieve to make partner is to win Arthur’s case, and the only way to win his case and save his earldom is to keep him from spending his days hungover in bed and his nights pouring Cristal on naked, drunk women before flying off in his private jumbo jet to the next party.

Arthur was enough to make any woman need a stiff drink.

review

Dear Reader, please take note – this is part 1 of 2.  There is a cliff hanger.  And it’s a big one.  But good news!  You don’t have to wait too long for book 2 – it is due out on 16th May.

Now, to the book!

I know that I am going to start this review in a weird place.  Bear with me.  I admit that sometimes, I get caught up on the details.  I am the person who shouts at the telly when there is an inaccuracy.  So, speaking as someone who spent the first 25 years of my working life in the British legal profession, I was concerned that my attention might be diverted by incorrect details in the legal background.  Let me be clear, my attention didn’t wander – at all.  For me, the author’s attention to the basics allowed me to concentrate on the story.

And, what a story.  This book was delicious – extended literary foreplay if you will.  The restraint and quasi tentative nature of the relationship between Gen and Arthur is maddening, but addictive.

Blair very cleverly brings the reader to a mini crescendo with this ending, whilst leaving the reader chasing the high of a satisfactory conclusion.

If there was any doubt, I loved it.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

WorkingStiffSynopsis:

Here’s the problem: when Rox was hired, she told her smoking-hot boss Cash that she was married, but she’s not. Now, three years later, she’s kind of accidentally living with him, and he’s being a perfect gentleman, dang it.

Everybody in the office said that Cash was a heartbreaker, that he’d bump her and dump her, so Rox decided not to become a statistic. She went out and bought herself some rings of the finest cubic zirconia so that she could work with Cash, who was several inches over six feet tall, emerald-eyed, ripped, gorgeous, his tailored suit clinging to his athletic body, sporting a British accent, and loaded.

It had seemed like such a good plan at the time.

But now, three years later, she and Cash have become friends. They travel together for work often, and they’re the best of buddies. When Rox gets thrown out of her apartment, Cash insists that she come live with him until they can find her a place because that’s what friends do.

Now, even though everyone insists that Cash never goes after married women, something about him has changed. There are little touches, little slips, and Rox is more and more tempted to tell hunky, gorgeous Cash that she never was married.

And then he’ll take her and break her, and then he’ll walk away, and then she’ll lose her job, and she still hasn’t found a place to live.

And yet, every time her looks at her with mischief in his dark green eyes, every time they’re teasing and it somehow turns into tickling, every time she swats at him and somehow ends up in his arms, she wants so much to risk everything.

What’s a working stiff to do when she falls in love with her friend, the boss?

excerpt

“Why?” Rox had finally asked Melanie, one of the beautiful-blonde admins. Rox could tell Melanie apart from the rest of the herd of golden beauties by the strawberry highlights in her hair. “Why would women have casual sex with him if he’s just going to dump them like that?”

“Well,” Melanie had mused, and her smile turned sentimental and vague. “He’s never a jerk about it. There’s never a fight. There’s no drama. He never calls a woman a slut afterward, ever, or says anything bad about her to anyone, as far as we can tell, and we all talk a lot. He won’t even confirm or deny anything. And he’s,” she cleared her throat, “attentive.”

Rox frowned. “Like, he listens to you?”

“Yeah, that, too.” Melanie twiddled with a piece of paper on her desk and wouldn’t look at Rox.

“You mean that he told you that he loved you?”

“Oh, no. He’s not mushy at all. A good time is had by all, but he doesn’t lie about what’s going on. He doesn’t talk about ‘love’ at all.”

“But there’s something else,” Rox prompted. “He’s attentive—”

Mel cleared her throat. “In bed. I mean, you know. He’s good in bed.”

Rox shrugged, wanting to reach over and snatch that shredded paper away from the blonde. “A lot of guys are good in bed.”

Mel glanced up at Rox, her blue eyes serious and direct. “Not like him.”

excerpt

Octavia Hawkes glared at Gen. “How are you going to prevent Lord Severn from ending up in the gossip pages again? How are you going to prevent it tonight?

Gen quailed. “I—I guess I could follow him around and keep an eye on him instead of working here. That’s better than hitting refresh on the computer all night to see whether a photographer has already snapped an incriminating picture of him. You said yourself that he needs adult supervision. I’m an adult.”

That last part might have been a little more bitter than Gen had intended, but dang it, that whole night had been one anxiety-fueled refresh after another.

Octavia Hawkes leaned toward Gen. “And how do you plan to do that?”

Think-think-think-think-think.

Gen looked over Hawkes’s shoulder at Arthur Finch-Hatten, the Earl of Severn, the glorious scion of the British Empire—glamorous and gorgeous and strong and tall—who was silently laughing at her inability to keep him from destroying his life and her career.

Her hands clenched into fists. Gen said, “I just won’t let him put himself in undesirable positions.”

Lord Severn, Arthur, chuckled. “Good luck with that.”

Time to rope that steer and hogtie at least three of his legs.

Gen lifted her chin. “We’ll put it out there that I’m his new girlfriend. I’ll stay with him every waking hour, and he’ll stay with me. He’s been caught by a woman, and so it’s perfectly logical if he isn’t drinking and whoring his way across London anymore. I will be his supervising adult.”

Lord Severn stood and towered over both of them, panic widening his silvery eyes. “Wait a minute—”

“And if you don’t behave—” Gen stood up, braced her hands on her hips, and stared nearly straight into his gorgeous, shimmering eyes. She almost melted but she sure as Hell didn’t let herself get all gooey, “—then you can find yourself some new barristers, new ones who aren’t tenants in these chambers. You can start all the Hell over with someone else.”

Octavia Hawkes’s head snapped up, and her overly plush lips stretched into a grin. “I think that’s an exceptional idea, Gen.”

Lord Severn didn’t seem distressed by this development at all. Indeed, his face was utterly emotionless, and his silvery eyes turned icy. “So you’re to be my girlfriend in all ways?”

That asshole was trying to run her off.

“Hell, no,” Gen said, her Texas accent turning harsher than usual in her mouth. “You’ll give me no lip and keep your hands to yourself.”
