New Release & Review – Rook (Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #1) by J. C Andrijeski @jcandrijeski

Book & Author Details:

Rook (Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #1) by J C Andrijeski
Publication date: 22nd April 2017
Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Adult

RookFrom USA TODAY bestselling author, a psychic warfare alternative history set in a gritty version of Earth. Contains strong romantic elements – a book in the Bridge & Sword World. Apocalyptic. Psychic Romance.

“You are the Bridge…”

Allie Taylor lives in a world populated by seers, a second race discovered on Earth at the beginning of the 20th Century. Psychic, hyper-sexual and enslaved by governments, corporations and wealthy humans, seers are an exotic fascination to Allie, but one she knows she’ll likely never encounter, given how rich you have to be to get near one.

Then a strange man shows up at her work –– then another –– and pretty soon Allie finds herself on the run from the law, labeled a terrorist and in the middle of a race war she didn’t even know existed. Yanked out of her life by the mysterious and uncommunicative Revik, Allie discovers her blood may not be as “human” as she always thought, and the world of seers might not be quite as distant as she always imagined.

When Revik tells her she’s the Bridge, a mystical being meant to usher in the evolution of humanity––or possibly its extinction––Allie must choose between the race that raised her and the one where she might truly belong.

A psychic end of the world story with romance, a cyberpunk flair and apocalyptic, metaphysical leanings akin to the Matrix.

NOTE: An alternate version of this book was previously published as book 1 in the “ALLIE’S WAR” series (this version has been heavily revised/edited prior to re-release).

Standalone novel. No cliffhanger.

*Warning: this book contains graphic language, sex, and violence. Mature readers only. Not intended for young readers.*

ROOK is book 1 in the Bridge & Sword: Awakenings series – a series set in the Bridge & Sword World. It is also related to the Quentin Black World, and takes place in the wider history/world of the seers.

Next in the Bridge & Sword world: SHIELD (Bridge & Sword: Awakenings #2) – coming soon! Or if you’d like to read more about seers, check out BLACK IN WHITE (Quentin Black Mystery #1), which occurs in a version of Earth much closer to our own.

THE BRIDGE & SWORD WORLD encompasses a number of dark, gritty science fiction and apocalyptic story arcs with romantic (and sexy) elements, starring Alyson Taylor and her partner, dark and dangerous infiltrator, Dehgoies Revik. For fans of gritty, character-driven science fiction and fantasy worlds, filled with twists and turns and backstabbing betrayals, with heroes and villains who can be equally relatable (and sometimes the same people). The Bridge & Sword books span continents and historical periods as Allie and Revik try to save the human and seer races from destroying one another, and keep their friends and loved ones alive in the process.

If you like your books with complex world building, and detailed, intricate mythology and history, with wonderfully deep character development then this book might just be for you!

Now obviously, I don’t want to give anything away, but parts of the relationship story between Allie and Revik hurt my heart.  The author seems to do that to me with regularity, which is a testament to the strength of her writing.  But don’t get misunderstand, the relationship within these pages has a very different feel to the Quentin Black stories.  There is a sense of yearning which just drew me in.

This is not a book which is a superficial read.  This is the kind of book that you have to focus on – that’s really not a chore though when the writing and the pacing is as good as this.  The way the web weaves together is really very clever.

I look forward to reading more in the series.

About the author

I’m a USA Today bestselling author of sexy, apocalyptic and cyberpunk-y paranormal mystery, alternate history, urban fantasy & supernatural suspense, often with a metaphysical bent.

While it might seem like I have a (perhaps overly?) friendly relationship with my dark side, if you read my stuff, you’ll discover pretty quick that, at base and in my heart, I’m a big, sappy, pie in the sky idealist, and that I always want the light to win, love to win, the good guys to win, compassion to win, the bad guys to be redeemed or at least to find love…even if they have to crawl through mud and blood and crazy sex and betrayal and broken fingernails to get there.

Of course, not all of them make it…but I always hope that they will.

Other stuff: I have a background in journalism and political history, and a Master’s degree in the latter. I love to travel and to interact with different cultures and histories and I’ve traveled a fair bit (although never enough – there are always new places to see!).  I’ve also lived a lot of different places, including all over the United States where I was born, as well as stints in Europe, Australia and now Asia, including a few years in India and now a few in Thailand.

Currently, I live and work full-time as a writer in Bangkok, Thailand, where I have a beautiful view of a Buddhist wat right out the window while I write.

Review – Stiff Drink by Blair Babylon @BlairBabylon

Book & Author Details:

Stiff Drink by Blair Babylon
(Runaway Billionaires: Arthur Duet #1)
Publication date: March 28th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

BID Arthur Test 9Synopsis:

Genevieve is a lawyer, not a babysitter, and certainly not a dog trainer. She is just about to become a full barrister, a British litigating attorney, when her law mentor dies unexpectedly. She is shuffled off to another barrister, one who’s nothing at all like her kind and decent former mentor, and then she is assigned the office’s worst case: Arthur Finch-Hatten, six-feet and four-inches of ripped, loaded, hot English nobleman who is wasting his life and his inherited estate so audaciously that his younger brother is suing him for control of their family’s earldom. There is a darn good chance that Arthur will lose everything, even his crazed, badly behaved puppy.

Unless he shapes up.

Her new boss hasn’t been able to convince Arthur to mend his ways. His uncle’s lectures haven’t had any effect on his depraved debauchery and lavish lifestyle.

The only way for Genevieve to make partner is to win Arthur’s case, and the only way to win his case and save his earldom is to keep him from spending his days hungover in bed and his nights pouring Cristal on naked, drunk women before flying off in his private jumbo jet to the next party.

Arthur was enough to make any woman need a stiff drink.

Dear Reader, please take note – this is part 1 of 2.  There is a cliff hanger.  And it’s a big one.  But good news!  You don’t have to wait too long for book 2 – it is due out on 16th May.

Now, to the book!

I know that I am going to start this review in a weird place.  Bear with me.  I admit that sometimes, I get caught up on the details.  I am the person who shouts at the telly when there is an inaccuracy.  So, speaking as someone who spent the first 25 years of my working life in the British legal profession, I was concerned that my attention might be diverted by incorrect details in the legal background.  Let me be clear, my attention didn’t wander – at all.  For me, the author’s attention to the basics allowed me to concentrate on the story.

And, what a story.  This book was delicious – extended literary foreplay if you will.  The restraint and quasi tentative nature of the relationship between Gen and Arthur is maddening, but addictive.

Blair very cleverly brings the reader to a mini crescendo with this ending, whilst leaving the reader chasing the high of a satisfactory conclusion.

If there was any doubt, I loved it.

Blair Babylon is the nom de plume of an award-winning, USA Today-bestselling author who used to publish literary fiction. Because professional reviews of her other fiction usually included the caveat that there was too much deviant sex and too much interesting plot, she decided to abandon all literary pretensions, let her freak flag fly, and write hot, sexy, erotic romance, plus wild, suspenseful thrillers, science fiction, and urban fantasy using the super-secret pen name Blair C. Babylon.

Review & #giveaway – Rough by Sybil Bartel @sybilbartel @xpressotours

Book details:

Rough by Sybil Bartel
(Thrust, #2)
Publication date: March 20th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

I’m not your boyfriend. I’m not the guy next door. I don’t even play nice.

My hands twisting in your hair, my whispered demand in your ear—I’m the fantasy you’ll wish you never had.

When I’m through with you, every inch of your body will know where I’ve been. You won’t crave more, you’ll beg for it. Because I’m not just the cocky smile with military hardened muscles you paid five grand for—I’m the experience you’ll never forget.

One night with me and you’ll know exactly why women pay me to be rough.

This book overlaps with the time frame in Thrust (link below).  I strongly recommend that you read Thrust first, although it is totally possible to read this this volume on a stand alone basis.

So to the book itself.  I’m not going to lie.  This book is seriously hot.  And you aren’t eased into it either. Oh no.  Prepare yourself for a full on, in your face, explicit ride.  And despite the candid nature of the narrative (give it a miss if you like clean romance) there is, somehow, an underlying feeling of insecurity and tenderness wrapped up securely within it.

I really enjoyed the teasing out of the connection and growth of the relationship between these two.  Her hesitancy, his unexpected response to her.

Overall, for me, I think that this was a stronger story than Thrust.  I had a better emotional connection to the character development.  I can’t wait to see what the author delivers with Grind.

About the author

Sybil Bartel grew up in Northern California with her head in a book and her feet in the sand. She dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew her into the world of storytelling. She loves the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes her swoon.
Sybil now resides in Southern Florida and while she doesn’t get to read as much as she likes, she still buries her toes in the sand. If she isn’t writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in her backyard, you can find her spending time with her handsomely tattooed husband, her brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…

But Seriously?

Here are ten things you probably really want to know about Sybil.

She grew up a faculty brat. She can swear like a sailor. She loves men in uniform. She hates being told what to do. She can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks her out. Her favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—she can’t decide. She has a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on her for driving directions, ever. And she has a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell her husband.
