guestpost

What inspires me to write?

Writing takes inspiration.  Like all art forms there has to be something that stirs the passion to want to sit for hours writing, editing and revising and still have that personal editor sitting on your shoulder telling you it’s still not good enough.

It’s inspiration that pushes us past all of that insecurity and self doubt. Where do I find mine? Three places.

The first is my genre itself. Erotica/BDSM by itself is inspirational in the wide range of stories I can dive into.  It is one of the few genres where you can write a mystery, paranormal, romance (regardless of time period) or fantasy and have erotica as the foundation.   It also opens the door to choices. I can make the erotica the main thread or as a backdrop to the mystery or paranormal adventure.  My inspiration isn’t pigeon hold, I can go anywhere with it.

Second piece of inspiration is in the books I read.  It doesn’t matter the genre, in reading other author’s and seeing their magic come alive, fuels my own desire to create a story. It could be any element, wordsmith, characterization, the story telling that sparks that inspiration to write.

Lastly, the readers. When I finished my short story, Unveiling Façade, I looked at it as a stand alone. Done. Then the reviews on Amazon popped up, and several implied there would be more. Shortly after that I got emails about a sequel. Up to then I hadn’t given it a thought. I had moved on to other ideas but the more I listened to the readers, I got inspired to continue the story.

While the three above mentioned areas are my got to places for inspiration, it can come from anywhere. I am fond of asking this question to any event around me, “What if”.  By applying a what if to events real un unreal, it opens the door to some great inspiration and story ideas.  When I wrote, Unveiling Facade, it wasn’t so much about a women going to a “Eyes Wide Shut” style of place for a party. The “what if” that inspired me was the idea of her starting her journey of overcoming her fears through a carnal darkness that awoken within her.

In the end, inspiration comes from within, but the world around us, gives us ample inspiration in its own right.

About the author

Lisette grew up in a home full of artistic types. Her brothers became professionals in painting and photography, while her father worked in TV and film. Reading had been a passion of hers, mostly historical fiction. It wasn’t until her father left laying around (bathroom no less) a trashy Nazi BDSM magazine that her desire to write kicked in. That moment changed her life and she dove headlong into the world of depraved/deviant erotica.

It took years before Lisette could put those stories that rambled in her darkest corridors to paper. Unveiling Facade is her first of many yet to come.

The Lair  – A Sinner’s Grove Novel

THE LAIR AD.jpg

A 2015 New Apple Book Award Medalist

After her playboy father dies in a racing boat mishap, innkeeper Daniela Dunn must travel from Northern California back to Verona, Italy and her childhood home, an estate called the Panther’s Lair. To say she’s reluctant to go is an understatement. In fact, she’s petrified. The mansion she grew up in holds terrifying memories and deeply buried secrets. It’s a place where appearances are deceiving and the price of honesty could be death.

Complicating matters is the fact that her flirtatious friend, Detective Gabe de la Torre, is tagging along—without being asked. “I don’t need a babysitter,” she complains, and is even more upset when she learns Gabe has his own secret reason for following her to Italy. As Dani is drawn into her family’s intrigues, Gabe proves he’s much more than a friend, however. He’s a sworn protector who may lose his own life in the process of saving hers.

Gabe de la Torre needs to settle old family debts before starting fresh with the woman he feels could be The One. But when a mystery woman reveals that Dani’s father may have been murdered, the stakes rise dramatically and Gabe realizes they’re now players in a treacherous game. Keeping Dani safe becomes his top priority, even as Dani strives to figure out whom she can trust: her relatives, Gabe, or even herself.

The Lair, a stand-alone novel, follows on the heels of “Sinner’s Grove,” the foundational novel for A.B. Michaels’ far-reaching romantic suspense series of the same name. “Sinner’s Grove” centers around the family, friends and associates of a world-famous artists’ retreat on the coast of northern California. “The Art of Love,” an award-winning historical romance, recounts the founding of the retreat by Klondike King August Wolff and artist Amelia Starling at the turn of the twentieth century. Both “Sinner’s Grove” and “The Art of Love” are available on Amazon.

Red Trumpet Press

DepthOfBeauty_CoverBlurb

A stand-alone historical novel, The Depth of Beauty follows on the heels of A.B. Michaels’ award-winning fiction debut, The Art of Love.

Born to wealth and prestige, handsome and successful in his own right, Will Firestone is the crème de la crème of 1903 San Francisco society.  But when a business venture draws him into the city’s reviled Chinatown, his notions of what matters in life are tested in the extreme.  With the help of an exotic young mother and a mysterious orphan, Will embarks on a journey of self-discovery, where love, danger and tragedy will change his life forever.

The Depth of Beauty is part of a dual-genre series, “Sinner’s Grove,” which chronicles the family and friends of a world-famous artists’ retreat on the northern California coast.  The stories follow both historical and contemporary tracks, and can be read separately or together for greater depth.  Other titles in the series include the contemporary suspense novels Sinner’s Grove and The Lair.

Author Spotlight – Annabel Fanning @annabelfanning

About the author

annabel fanningAnnabel Fanning is a British-born, Australian-based writer and full-time cat enthusiast. When she’s not indulging in her love of writing, she likes to paint her nails, shop and wander off into nature — not necessarily in that order.

She began writing songs as a child, the most memorable of which was entitled: “Tropical Night in Switzerland”. Throughout her teens, songwriting was the most rebellious form of expression that she was willing to partake in (no tattoos, drugs, or biker boys) and her love for storytelling developed. There was just one problem: music wasn’t her passion. A month before her 20th birthday whilst sitting under the Californian sun a few deck chairs down from Robert Pattinson, inspiration struck, and Annabel began writing her first novel. The years flew by and now at 26, Annabel has written a handful of novels, which she plans on releasing throughout 2015/16. She’d really like it if you read them.

the blurb

Freya Nissan grew up knowing that she was different. A free spirit, an outsider, a maverick who sees beyond the confines of her human world. She’s the soulful, idle daydreamer of her sleepy English village, who no one believes will ever amount to much…until the day she does.

Her visionary beliefs spark in her a passion to bring to life the dreams she has at night — dreams of journeying to other realms (entire worlds that exist alongside and even intertwine with the Earth we live on now). And as this story embarks, Freya disappears from her village in search of a discovery that will change her forever.

Christian Delaney died a long time ago. From that day to this he has been waiting for a love that seems determined to elude him…until the day Freya appears.

The inter-dimensional love story that unfolds between them proves to be as unique as it is troublesome, for not all are enchanted by Freya’s capabilities and for daring to be different she and Christian might just pay the ultimate price.

This series debut from bestselling author Annabel Fanning delivers a thrilling and compelling tale of adventure, love, and believing in your dreams.

excerpt

“So, where am I?” I ask nervously, walking forward and hoping that this awkward feeling will disappear very soon.

But before I can get an answer, I stumble over my own feet and fall forwards. He catches me in his arms without moving backwards. My hands are splayed on his chest. I remove my left one immediately, but the right one stays where it is. Over his heart.

We stare at each other. There’s a moment’s silence, which feels like hours. Then understanding comes pouring into me.

Oh my God!

I look into his eyes, my own now flooded with a mixture of panic and accusation. He stares sadly back, obviously I’ve reacted the way he feared I would.

I feel nothing under my hand. There is no heartbeat.

“Am I dead?” I whisper.

Images flash through my mind — my parents, Felix, my home…can this place really be where I am safest?

He looks down, then back into my eyes. The back of his hand brushes softly over my bruised cheek, but I pull it away. This is no time for him to be seducing me.

“Am I dead?” I ask again, a little more firmly.

He gently takes my hand off of his chest and places it over my own heart. I feel its quickened pace and sigh in relief.

“No, Freya, you’re not dead,” he says, seriously. “But I am.”

‎Story Time

This is The Portal Opener’s brush with someone famous (Robert Pattinson).

In 2008 I lived in LA, writing and recording music. I was staying in a huge apartment complex and when I first arrived I took the bus everywhere.
I was just outside the complex coming back from the bus stop when an old beat-up black BMW coupe (I remember it because it was SO cool) drove past and I did a double take at the driver. Being a HUGE Harry Potter fan I immediately recognised Cedric Diggory was driving. I thought that was cool, then forgot all about it.

In July(ish) I went to the cinema and one of the trailers before the film was this darkly-lit indie-looking thing which didn’t make a very good first impression on me. Twas the trailer for Twilight.

By mid-September I had began writing The Portal Opener. I was 19 and didn’t have a fake ID, so had to spend every night in the small apartment I shared. And because I was cooped up all night, I spent everyday sitting on a lounger by the pool, in the beautiful Californian late-summer sun, my computer on my lap, writing, writing, writing.

Everyday Mr. Edward Cullen himself showed up and sat by the pool too. This went on for about six weeks. Me writing, him reading scripts/books or doing I don’t know what. Sometimes we were on opposite sides, sometimes right next to each other.

Over those weeks, I saw his anonymity disappear. There used to be no one at the pool during the day, but quietly more and more girls appeared the closer Twilight came to being released.

At the end of October, on the same day, I flew home to Perth and he started the press junket for Twilight. I finished writing The Portal Opener two weeks later. A month later still I was sat in the cinema watching Twilight, thinking…if only I’d said hello!

the blurb

she1PART 1

“LOVE and SEX at once, is a powerful combination.”

Escape into Annabel Fanning’s feel-good bestselling erotic debut. She Part 1 is a contemporary and humorous look into the lives of two people who are on the precipice of true love. The novel uniquely crosses several genres, mixing first-grade erotica seamlessly with women’s lit and breathtaking romance.

The story unfolds over sixteen thrilling and erotically-charged days, during which the reader is thrust into the heart of Paris, the novel’s backdrop, and into the daily lives of the construction world’s elite.

Logan Leary is a reformed bad-boy who moved to the city of love fifteen years ago to start his life over. Now he owns one of Paris’s most successful companies and leads as seemingly charmed life. There’s just one thing missing: Gemima Samuels.

Gemima Samuels moved to Paris with her down-on-his-luck boyfriend eight years ago. She coasted through life (in that annoying way we sometimes do) until her boyfriend cheated on her and life dealt her a wake up call. Choosing to start afresh, Gemima ends her relationship and quits her job before being hired by the most prestigious interior design firm in the city.

A supposedly inconsequential lunch date turns out to be the start of something phenomenal that will change both of their lives forever.

Set in picturesque Paris, She Part 1 is an erotic tale about falling madly in love. Combining sex, passion, and romance, these two high-flying professionals will leave you saying, “Oh, la la!”

she2PART 2

“LOVE and SEX at once, is a powerful combination. LOVE and SEX in Paris, is better.”

In this sequel Annabel continues to effortlessly marry several genres. From laugh-out-loud comedy to steaming erotica to heart pounding romance, She Part 2 has it all.

Picking up where Part 1 left off, Gemima and Logan escape Paris for the weekend to indulge in all manner of pleasurable things on the French Riviera. Relaxation, sightseeing and sex — it’s a perfect combination!

Once back in Paris, life hands out a few surprises, from troublesome ex-boyfriends, to changes at work, to a heartwarming best friends confession. But the lead up to Logan’s birthday brings one event that Gemima must conquer (and try her best not to say anything inappropriate which, you know, is hard for her!) She must meet Logan’s parents, and his bastard of a brother…

Taking place over thirteen electric days, She Part 2 continues to explore love, sex and a relationship unlike any other you’ve ever read. This smart-talking duo will leave you saying, “Oh mon dieu!”

Part 1 is 115,000 words and Part 2 is 150,000 of “oh, la la” goodness. For readers 18+ over only. Contains explicit sexual content, a hero that will make your heart flutter, and a heroine who will make you laugh out loud. To experience the full scope of their relationship, this series is designed to be read in its entirety.

Playlist

I incorporated a lot of music in these series (each chapter is named after a song, as is the entire series). The chapter playlists can be found here.

And here’s a guest post that went live last week about it:

I LOVE music! It’s a huge part of my life. I spent all of my teen years writing songs and coming up with melodies and putting them to tracks in various recording studios around the city where I live. Music features heavily in the two book series that I wrote before She Part 1 & 2, however with these books I went a little further and decided to name each chapter in the books after a song that I feel best resonates with the contents of the corresponding chapter. Here’s what I came up with…

She Part 1 soundtrack:
1. Begin Again by Taylor Swift
(the lyrics “on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again” could not have been more perfect, because the book starts on Wednesday and (you guessed) the first scene is in a cafe, and the entire chapter is about the excitement of a new beginning)
2. My Funny Valentine by Alice Fredenham (an Ella Fitzgerald cover)
3. Searchlight by Jamie Catto, Kelli Ali, Duncan Bridgeman, Paul Herman, Lévon Min

(I found this song whilst cruising the Chillout Lounge music channel like my characters in the book do. It’s become of my favourite songs ever!)

  1. Domino by Jesse J
  2. Tell Me by Mia Dyson
  3. Ready For Love by India Arie
  4. Nothing At All by Santana feat. Musiq

(This choice was purely about the music rather than the lyrics. The smooth and funky Santana beat was perfect for the sexy dancing scenes, oh lala!)

  1. You Shook Me All Night Long by ACDC
  2. Mirrors by Boyce Avenue (a Justin Timberlake cover)
  3. Happy by Pharrell Williams

(Although perfect for the story, this is also a bit of an homage to my friend, who I was staying with when I wrote She Part 1. Happy was her ringtone, and her phone used to ring off the hook.)

  1. Replay by Zendaya
  2. Burn by Ellie Goulding
  3. You Got It by Roy Orbison

She Part 2 soundtrack:

  1. Kill Of The night by Gin Wigmore

(I went back and forth on whether or not to use this one. It’s just so damn cool, that I had to go for it.)

  1. I’ll Be Your Lover, Too by Van Morrison
  2. Ex’s And Oh’s by Elle King

(A late edition which fits perfectly with this chapter. This is the only song in the series that I didn’t find myself. Logan’s number 1 fan, Jennifer, found this one for me.)

  1. Empire by Shakira
  2. What A Man by Jessica Mauboy (a Linda Lyndell cover)

(Dedicated from Gemima to Mr. Logan Leary.)

  1. Dancing In The Dark by Bruce Springsteen
  2. Inside Out by Bryan Adams
  3. The Best by Tuna Turner
  4. Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson
  5. Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon

(Eighteen months I had this song in mind for these particular scenes. My patience paid off, this is a great part of the story, even if I do say so myself!)

  1. It’s My Party by Lesley Gore
  2. Jungle by Emma Louise
  3. Everything Has Changed by Taylor Swift, ft. Ed Sheeran

(It seems fitting that the penultimate chapter links back to the very first one.)

  1. She by Charles Aznavour

(Ah, the namesake of the entire series! This is such a beautiful, striking and romantic song, and so utterly perfect for Logan to dedicate to Gemima. I couldn’t have finished it in any other way.)

If you’d like to have a little jam session, all the songs are available to listen to on my website
