Ever since Jack protected Samantha from a high school bully, the two have been friends. But she wants more from the sexy firefighter. Too bad Jack has always seen her as the shy sweet girl, who can’t stand up for herself.
She can’t resist his boyish smile when he stops by the bakery for coffee. Or stop herself from bringing baked goods to the fire station.
It’s time to prove she’s all grown up and can take care of herself.
And show him, she’s done being friends
There’s a lot going on in this reasonably short book – several sub plots which intersect, and add another layer to this friends to lovers romance.
There were parts of this that didn’t play out as I expected, but if ever there was a pair of lead characters who just needed to have a frank conversation, it was these two. Samantha is a bit of a contradiction – weak at some points where you might expect her to be stronger, and conversely strong where one would expect her character not to be, based on previous behaviour. On the other hand, Jack was very sweet and attentive at times, but completely oblivious at other points.
That behaviour was, I confess, a little frustrating to read. Nevertheless, this was a light, quick read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
